Postnatal Care from a midwife

Sleepy baby

During the postnatal period, every woman is eligible for personal, professional care from a midwife. This is irrelevant of where, how, and when her baby was born.

I care and support families postnatally regardless of whether they return directly after the birth to the comfort of their own home, or they decide to spend the first nights in hospital (the length of the hospital stay is decided by the woman). I work within a flexible care plan. Therefore, I can provide both extensive care by uncomplicated deliveries as well as by deliveries resulting from a complicated pregnancy and when complications arise unexpectedly.

My services include breastfeeding support, examination of the newborn including weight, PKU test, examination of the mother, and substantial education on new parenting, bonding, and postnatal exercises.

If you are interested in this service and would like my support in the postnatal period, then please contact me as soon as possible (at the beginning of the pregnancy!). This will allow us time to meet during the mother child booklet appointment.

Breastfeeding und nutritional advice

baby breast feeding

Breastmilk is the natural nutrition for babies and is optimised to provide for their many developmental needs. Breastfeeding has many advantages not only for the baby but also for the mother. For example: breastfeeding results in a more rapid return of the woman’s body to its pre-pregnant state and assists greatly in the bond between mother and child.

A good start to breastfeeding is fundamental in developing a satisfying breastfeeding relationship.

Complementary to my midwifery qualifications I am also a breastfeeding and lactation consultant (IBCLC, internationally recognised). https://www.stillen.at.

I support and advise families throughout the entire breastfeeding period. My services include assistance with breastfeeding, bonding, problems with the initialisation of breastfeeding, mixed nutrition – breastfeeding and bottles, weight issues, introducing solids and the cessation of breastfeeding.

Childbirth and parenting classes

Those who are well prepared are more relaxed as they enter the birthing process and can be more actively involved. For most people, being well informed is the key. A wide variety of themes will be discussed in detail, along with practical exercises to try. These include: the end of the pregnancy; the birth – contractions, working through pain, positions during the delivery; support from the partner, new parenting, the postnatal period, bonding, and breastfeeding.

The ideal time to visit a course is between the 28th and 36th week of pregnancy. Of course participation before or after is also possible.

Two options are available:

Childbirth classes in a group

The childbirth preparation class in English is currently only available as a "crash-course" and not in a group.

The pelvic floor – make it fit?

baby with hat

The pelvic floor belongs to a group of muscles commonly called the core muscles. It plays a central role in maintaining a healthy body. The pelvic floor muscles stretch across the pelvis like a supportive hammock holding the pelvic organs in place, helping maintain good posture, controlling bladder and bowel function, and assisting in a positive sexual experience.

During pregnancy the pelvic floor muscles work harder than normal, as they are softened by the effects of pregnancy hormones and required to support the weight of the growing baby. During the delivery they allow the passage of the baby through the birth canal. Postnatally the pelvic floor needs to regenerate and regain its full function.

Throughout the whole process of pregnancy and childbirth there is potential for tightening, overstretching and injury of these muscles, resulting in a weakened pelvic floor. This may result in, for example, urine-, fecal- or flatulent- incontinence, decreased sexual function or pelvic, vulval or back pain.

With correct, regular training it is possible to heighten the awareness of the pelvic floor and to strengthen and increase the flexibility of the muscles. The control of the pelvic floor can be improved and activation or relaxation of the muscles achieved in a coordinated manner, improving its overall function.

Check-up during Pregnancy

At an arranged check-up appointment, a gentle vaginal examination is performed to assess the pelvic floor function und where necessary tension can be released to increase the blood flow through the tissues. Instruction in the correct activation and lift technique required by pelvic floor exercises is given. Following the examination, we work out a personal training plan together.

Postnatal Check-up

Postnatally a vaginal examination is used to assess the function of the pelvic floor. The healing of vaginal tears is checked and where necessary tension can be released to increase the blood flow through the tissues. The primary goals of this examination are to teach correct activation and increase the awareness of the pelvic floor muscles.

A pelvic floor check-up is advised for all new mothers regardless of the method of delivery. The pelvic floor has an increased strain throughout pregnancy, not only childbirth. The scar tissue from a cesarean-birth can also cause added tension.
